Mawuli Semevo Honored with Emotional Vigil at National Theatre

The Ghanaian film industry gathered at the National Theatre to pay tribute to veteran actor Mawuli Yao Semevo, who tragically passed away on February 20, 2025, after sustaining severe burns in a fire accident at his home. The event was marked by deep sorrow and heartfelt tributes from industry players, friends, and government officials. Veteran actor David Dontoh was overwhelmed with grief while delivering a tribute on behalf of Ghana’s film industry. Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, also spoke about Semevo’s lasting legacy. The ceremony featured performances by Fred Amugi and other veteran actors, who sang a choral piece in his honor, as well as a cultural troupe that performed a traditional dirge.


The vigil brought together notable personalities, including Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and veteran actress Irene Opare, who praised Semevo’s contributions to the arts. Other respected figures, such as Catherine Afeku, Edinam Atatsi, Akofa Edjeani, and Inspector Bediako, were also in attendance. Semevo was widely regarded as a pillar in Ghana’s creative arts industry, known for his dedication and mentorship of younger actors. His impact extended beyond acting, as he was deeply involved in stage performances and script development. The presence of the YOLO cast at the event highlighted his active involvement in the popular series before his passing, emphasizing his role in shaping the next generation of actors.

Throughout the night, colleagues and admirers shared memories of Semevo’s kindness, wisdom, and professionalism. Many speakers reflected on the void left by his passing and the lessons he imparted to the industry. Attendees called for greater recognition and support for veteran actors, stressing the importance of preserving Semevo’s legacy.
