The ECG container theft scandal has been making headlines in Ghana. It all started when an investigative committee discovered discrepancies in the records of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at Tema Port. The committee found that out of 2,491 uncleared containers, only 1,134 were accounted for, leaving 1,347 containers unaccounted for ¹.
Recently, National Security apprehended 12 Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian in connection with the missing containers. The suspects were caught during an intelligence-led operation at two aluminum smelting companies near the Shai Hills Game Reserve. It's alleged that they were involved in the illegal processing of electrical cables, melting them into aluminum bars for export ¹.
In addition to the arrests, security agencies have recovered 40 of the missing containers from a warehouse in Kpone. The owner of the facility, an Indian national, has also been arrested. He claims to have legally purchased the containers last year, but investigations are ongoing to verify his claims ¹.
The Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has assured the public that authorities are committed to recovering all missing containers and bringing those responsible to justice.
