Two reasons why Manchester United sold Bruno Fernandes to Real Madrid in light of the harsh new reality
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a heartless businessman who would not think twice about selling Bruno Fernandes this summer given Manchester United's dire financial situation.
In the past, Manchester United supporters would have dismissed the rumour that Real Madrid is interested in signing Bruno Fernandes this summer. Regardless of the offer, United wouldn't sell their captain and best player, would they?
Since United has changed, it is impossible to completely rule out the idea. According to reports, Real Madrid is contemplating a £90 million bid for the offensive midfield player. Given their current predicament, the Old Trafford officials cannot dismiss such a sum of money out of hand if it materialises.
Currently ranked 13th in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim's team is frantically trying to win the Europa League in order to earn a spot in the Champions League the following season. Their on-field difficulties are reflected off it as well; in his most recent set of interviews, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe painted a dismal image.
To put it simply, the club has been spending more money than it has been making for the past seven years, which has left it in a very precarious position, he stated. "And with Manchester United running out of money at the end of this year, the end of 2025, that place ended."
He went on to name players who are "not good enough" for United and hinted that huge changes are in the works this summer. Fernandes is definitely good enough for United, having scored 16 goals and assisted 16 times in 44 games this season, but he might provide a quick way to new players for Amorim.
United would certainly prefer to trade players they no longer want, with loanees Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony at the top of the list, while Casemiro is deemed deadwood. However, selling undesired players is more difficult than selling high-quality players such as Fernandes.
As Amorim previously stated when questioned about the summer transfer window plans: "It is straightforward. To do something, we must sell players." Ratcliffe particularly mentioned the "fantastic" Fernandes when speaking to the media recently, but he is a businessman at heart, and if he believes there is a deal to be made, he will not hesitate.
