Filming has commenced for a multi-million Naira epic movie based on the life and legacy of the late Duro Ladipo, Nigeria's foremost icon of folklore theatre and music. The project is currently underway at a location in Oyo State.
Mr. Wole Duro-Ladipo, the son of the legendary playwright, shared the news on Sunday in Ibadan during a courtesy visit to Chief Lekan Alabi, the founding Trustee of the Duro Ladipo Foundation.
“The film is set to premiere in cinemas both within Nigeria and internationally before the end of this year,” he revealed.
Duro-Ladipo, who resides in Chicago, USA, expressed confidence that everything is in place for the smooth and successful production of the film.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the late Duro Ladipo passed away 47 years ago at the age of 45. He died on March 11, 1978, during an illness at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
In response, Chief Alabi, the Maye Olubadan of Ibadanland, congratulated the Duro-Ladipo family for their efforts in preserving and promoting the legacy of the late playwright. He also reflected on Ladipo’s celebrated play Oba Koso, which won the top prize at the 1965 Commonwealth Film Festival in London.
“It was an outstanding play in its time, and it will be exciting to see the film adaptation in cinemas now,” Alabi noted.
Meanwhile, the lead pastor of Light Nation Church, Femi Lazarus, recently weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding whether gospel artists should be paid for their performances in church and other events.
Lazarus explained, "A music minister expresses their ministry through music. A music artist, however, is not a kingdom-based minister and, therefore, isn’t specifically for the church. Churches don’t have music artists; they have music ministers. While being a music artist isn't inherently wrong, what we focus on is a music minister."
He further stated, "A true music minister should be traceable to a church and should be under the guidance of a pastor, where they are being shaped in doctrine. If you can't identify a music minister’s church affiliation, they are just an artist." Read more here.
