The disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from the Tema Port has sparked widespread outrage and demands for accountability. The containers, which held essential electrical equipment for national power distribution, vanished under suspicious circumstances, resulting in significant financial losses for the ECG and undermining the country's efforts to improve its power distribution infrastructure.
Meanwhile, National Security which is leading investigations into the missing containers has arrested 14 persons. They are made up of 10 foreign nationals and four Ghanaians.
This came to light when the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, visited the premises of Dangfang Company Ltd and Ponlok Manufacturing Company Ltd, near Shai Hills in the Greater Accra Region, as well as a warehouse at Kpone, to ascertain the quantity of missing cables uncovered by National Security.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability, with many Ghanaians demanding that those responsible be brought to justice. Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has called for the immediate arrest of three former officials, including Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Board Chairman of ECG; Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Energy Minister; and Samuel Dubik Mahama, former CEO of ECG. Gbande's demand for their arrest is a clear indication that the presidency is committed to getting to the bottom of the scandal and holding those responsible accountable.
Gbande's call for the arrest of the three former officials is a significant development in the investigation into the missing containers. It suggests that the presidency is taking a tough stance on corruption and is committed to ensuring that those who engage in corrupt practices are brought to justice. The fact that Afenyo-Markin, Opoku Prempeh, and Dubik Mahama have been implicated in the scandal is a clear indication that they have a case to answer.
The missing ECG containers saga is a classic example of how corruption and mismanagement can have far-reaching consequences for the country. The disappearance of the containers has not only resulted in significant financial losses for the ECG but has also undermined the country's efforts to improve its power distribution infrastructure. It is imperative that those responsible for the disappearance of the containers are held accountable and brought to justice.
Afenyo-Markin's response to the allegations, as reported in the media, is quite revealing. He has accused the governing party of misusing the justice system to silence dissent, arguing that governance should focus on national development rather than political witch-hunting. However, this response is nothing but a diversionary tactic aimed at shifting attention away from the real issues at hand.
Ghanaians must join in the call for the arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Opoku Prempeh, and Dubik Mahama because it is the only way to ensure that justice is served. The fact that these individuals have been implicated in the scandal is a clear indication that they have a case to answer. By joining in the call for their arrest, Ghanaians can send a strong message that corruption will no longer be tolerated in the country.
Furthermore, the arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Opoku Prempeh, and Dubik Mahama will serve as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in corrupt practices. It will also demonstrate the presidency's commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring that those who engage in corrupt practices are brought to justice.
Finally, Ghanaians must join in the call for the arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Opoku Prempeh, and Dubik Mahama. This is the only way to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for the disappearance of the ECG containers are held accountable. We must also caution current governing NDC appointees who are planning to engage in any corrupt activities that they will be held accountable.
