The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor has constituted a five-member committee to investigate the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) failure to clear over 2,500 containers from the port. The containers, which contain critical materials, have been left uncleared, leading to financial liabilities of an estimated GH¢1.5 billion.

The committee, which is chaired by Professor Innocent Senyo Akwasi, a procurement and supply chain management expert, has a month to audit ECG's procurement processes, ascertain the cost of the containers, and the liabilities therein. The other members are Georgette Emefa Fuga (Secretary), Vivian Ablakely, Abdulai Rahman, and Noble Yaw Kyei Addonu.

Minister Jinapor was concerned about ECG's failure to clear the containers despite suppliers having presented their bills of lading. He emphasized how important it was to address the issue without delay, stating, "We cannot sit idle and allow 1.5 billion cedis to be lost due to procurement failures. We cannot continue with business as usual; something must be done."

From the report of the committee, the ministry, in collaboration with other governmental bodies like the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, will bring people to book. Minister Jinapor asserted, "Whoever is found culpable, the law will take its course."

After inaugurating the committee, Minister Jinapor sat down with members of the Public Utility Workers' Union (PUWU) to discuss the challenges within the energy sector. He assured them that there was no intention to privatize ECG and that private sector involvement would be geared towards enhancing revenue collection. "If we had taken a decision to sell, then there would be no need to consult you," he stated.

General Secretary of PUWU Timothy Nyame congratulated the minister on his appointment and promised the union's collaboration to help transform the sector.

The action is part of the government's holistic efforts to address the challenges in ECG towards a more sustainable energy future for Ghana.
