President Mahama Directs Investigative Agencies to Collaborate with NPP MP on Alleged Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering at KIA.
President Mahama Orders Full Cooperation in Drug Trafficking Probe.
President John Dramani Mahama has instructed key investigative bodies—including the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Police CID, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and the National Security Coordinator—to work closely with Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South. The directive aims to ensure a thorough investigation into allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering linked to flights that recently landed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Background:
Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, a former Deputy Minister of Education and the current MP for Assin South, has urged National Security to provide full transparency regarding two flights that arrived in Ghana in early March and departed for Gran Canaria, Spain, on March 25.
The aircraft—an air ambulance and a private jet—remained in the country for several days before departing, raising suspicions about their purpose and cargo.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, April 1, Mr. Ntim Fordjour emphasized the need for greater transparency, demanding that authorities disclose more details about the flights.
“We have submitted the registration numbers and relevant details of these aircraft. We even provided information on when they landed and when they took off,” he stated.
He stressed the importance of transparency in governance, urging authorities to be open with the public.
“It is crucial that we uphold the principle of transparency in all matters of governance,” he added.
Concerns Over National Security’s Handling of a Warehouse Raid
The Minority Caucus has expressed dissatisfaction over National Security’s lack of updates regarding a February 9 raid on a warehouse in Sapeiman, Accra.
The operation led to the discovery of twelve 20-foot containers filled with gold bars and large sums of cash in multiple currencies, estimated to be worth billions of dollars.
Speaking at the press conference, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who serves as a ranking member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, criticized the prolonged silence from National Security nearly two months after the raid.
President Mahama's Statement
In response to the allegations, President Mahama released a statement on social media, emphasizing his government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“My attention has been drawn to allegations made at a press conference by Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour regarding two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport, suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.
"The government takes all such allegations seriously. To ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, I have directed all relevant investigative agencies—including NACOC, the Police CID, NIB, and the National Security Coordinator—to immediately and fully collaborate with the Honourable MP. He will provide all necessary information to aid the investigation, and all measures will be taken to expose any criminal activities.
We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for using Ghana as a transit hub or final destination for illicit drugs. Just last week, the NIB made a significant drug bust with a street value of $350 million.
The president posted this statement on his Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages on Tuesday, April 1.
