Hundreds of students at Labone Senior High School (SHS) were left displaced after a devastating fire engulfed three girls' dormitories on March 15, 2025. The fire, which broke out while students were attending their afternoon prep, resulted in one dormitory being completely destroyed, leaving 155 students without shelter, while two other dormitories sustained partial damage. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

Call for More Support
The national President of LOSA, Mr. Listowel Agbeli, urged all old students and the general public to contribute to the relief efforts. “This is a serious situation. We have around 600 students affected, and we must come together to support them. While we await support from the government, we are calling on all LOSA members to assist in any way possible,” he stated.
Government and Other Agencies Offer Assistance
In addition to LOSA’s contributions, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, provided emergency relief items, including:
300 mattresses
350 plastic buckets
350 plastic plates and cups
20 packets of roofing sheets
350 mosquito nets
350 blankets
The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, assured the school community that the government would work swiftly to restore the damaged facilities. Plans are underway to reconstruct the affected dormitories and improve fire safety measures in schools nationwide.
Expressions of Gratitude
Labone SHS Headmistress, Mrs. Rejoice Akua Acorlor, expressed deep gratitude for the support received. “These donations will greatly alleviate the difficulties faced by our students. We are thankful to LOSA, the government, and all other organizations that have stepped in to help us in this difficult time.”
Investigation into the Fire
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Preliminary assessments suggest a possible electrical fault, but further inquiries are ongoing.
A Unified Effort to Rebuild
The collective efforts of LOSA, government agencies, and the broader community highlight the importance of unity in times of crisis. Their swift response ensures that affected students can continue their education with the necessary support, demonstrating the strong bond between past and present members of the Labone SHS community.
