President Mahama’s Abolished Taxes: Why Citizens Should Not Pay Them

Former President John Dramani Mahama, during his tenure, implemented significant tax reforms aimed at reducing the financial burden on Ghanaians. Among these, several taxes were abolished, including the controversial Electronic Levy (E-Levy) and Betting Tax, to promote economic relief and fair financial policies. Despite these efforts, some agencies and individuals still attempt to enforce these scrapped taxes, misleading the public into making unnecessary payments. It is essential for every Ghanaian to know their rights and refuse to pay abolished taxes.

Key Taxes Abolished by President Mahama

1. E-Levy (Electronic Levy): This tax on electronic transactions was removed to encourage digital payments and reduce the financial strain on businesses and individuals.

2. Betting Tax: The tax on betting and gaming activities was abolished to support the entertainment and sports industries, allowing for increased participation without unnecessary deductions.

3. Kayayei Tax: A levy imposed on head porters (kayayei) was abolished to relieve young women engaged in this trade from excessive financial burdens.

4. Import Duty on Spare Parts: The removal of import duty on spare parts was aimed at reducing the cost of vehicle maintenance and supporting the transport industry.

5. Taxes on Domestic Airlines: This reform sought to make air travel within Ghana more affordable and encourage tourism and business travel.

6. Market Toll Reductions for Small Traders: Small-scale traders and market women benefitted from tax reliefs, making their businesses more sustainable.

7. Special Levies on Some Goods and Services: Certain consumption taxes and levies were removed to ease the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.

Benefits of Removing These Taxes

1. Financial Relief for Citizens

The removal of E-Levy and Betting Tax ensures that individuals keep more of their earnings, fostering better financial stability and encouraging savings and investment.

2. Encouraging Digital Transactions

Abolishing the E-Levy promotes a cashless economy, making financial transactions smoother and more efficient without fear of high deductions.

3. Boosting Economic Growth

Businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, benefit from lower costs, leading to expansion, job creation, and overall economic development.

4. Supporting Entertainment and Gaming Industry

Removing the Betting Tax allows the gaming industry to flourish, benefiting both operators and bettors while increasing revenue for sports development.

5. Fairer Taxation System

These removals ensure that taxation is fair and does not unduly burden the lower and middle-income earners.

Final Words

Ghanaians must stay informed and vigilant. The government abolished these taxes to support economic growth, and citizens should not allow themselves to be deceived into paying them. Always verify any tax demand before making payments and follow for more updates on your financial rights
