The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that the Accra Sports Stadium will remain closed for domestic football matches until a structural audit is completed. This decision follows requests from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to use the facility, which the NSA has declined due to safety concerns and ongoing assessments.
In an official statement released on April 2, 2025, the NSA confirmed that it had received a request from the GFA on March 28, 2025, to host matches at the stadium. However, due to the logistical and safety preparations required, the authority deemed it impractical to grant the request at this time.
“Following discussions with key stakeholders, the decision has been made that the Accra Hearts of Oak S.C vs. Nations F.C match will not be played at the Accra Sports Stadium,” the NSA stated.
Additionally, other upcoming fixtures, including the Accra Hearts of Oak S.C vs. Medeama F.C match, will only proceed once the structural audit is complete and necessary recommendations are implemented. The NSA assured stakeholders and the public that updates would be provided as soon as the stadium is deemed safe for football activities.
The Accra Sports Stadium has been largely unavailable for domestic matches since September 2024. However, it was briefly reopened in October 2024 to host Ghana’s AFCON 2025 Qualifier against Niger before closing again for pitch maintenance.
In March 2025, the stadium hosted its first competitive match in months when Ghana defeated Chad 5-0 in a 2026 World Cup Qualifier on March 21.
The last major renovation of the Accra Sports Stadium occurred in 2018 in preparation for the Women’s AFCON tournament, which Ghana hosted that year.
The NSA has not provided a definitive reopening date but has emphasized that the stadium will only be available for football matches once the structural audit is completed and safety measures are confirmed. The authority remains committed to ensuring the venue’s structural integrity before permitting football activities.
Football fans and stakeholders must await further updates from the NSA, while clubs and organizers may need to find alternative venues for their upcoming fixtures. The decision underscores the importance of maintaining safe and well-maintained sports facilities for both players and spectators.
