57% of NPP supporters prefer Bawumia to run for 2028 – Global InfoAnalytics

A recent Global InfoAnalytics poll reveals that 57% of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters favor Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential elections. Currently, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia leads the potential 2028 race with 48% of the overall vote. His closest competitors are Kennedy Agyapong with 25% and Dr. Osei Adutwum with 13%, while other candidates collectively secure 14%. Among NPP supporters specifically, Dr. Bawumia enjoys an even stronger lead, with 57% support compared to 22% for Agyapong and 11% for Adutwum.

The poll, conducted after the 2024 elections, also highlights shifting national sentiments. It shows that 62% of voters believe Ghana is headed in the right direction, a significant increase from 32% in October 2024. The approval rating of President John Dramani Mahama stands at 66%, with only 23% disapproving. The majority of voters in all regions except the Ashanti region approve of his leadership. Similarly, 60% believe the government is making progress in fighting corruption, with 56% stating that corruption has improved since the new administration took office. The Ghana Police Service is still perceived as the most corrupt institution, followed by the Immigration Service and the Judiciary. In contrast, the presidency and military are now considered the least corrupt institutions.

On the economic front, 51% of voters say their standard of living has improved compared to a year ago, while 66% are optimistic about future improvements. Economic issues, unemployment, and education remain the most pressing concerns for Ghanaians. The poll also shows that 38% believe the Free Education policy has improved, while 44% say it remains unchanged.

Regarding NPP’s 2024 election loss, 68% blame former President Nana Akufo-Addo, while 40% hold former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta responsible. Dr. Bawumia himself is blamed by 37% of respondents. Polling data suggests that Bawumia lost support in the final days of the campaign, with 14% of his potential voters switching to John Mahama on election day.

On security matters, former IGP George Akuffo Dampare received high approval ratings for his handling of the 2024 election security, but 53% support the president’s decision to replace him with Christian Tetteh Yohuno. Additionally, 58% of voters express confidence in the new IGP.

Overall, the poll suggests that Dr. Bawumia remains the strongest candidate within the NPP for 2028, with his leadership and visibility keeping him at the forefront. However, the political landscape remains fluid, and his position may evolve over time.
