Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken an early lead in the race for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position, according to a recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics. The survey places Bawumia ahead of other contenders, but analysts warn that the race is shaping up to be highly competitive.

The poll results show that Bawumia currently holds 48.1% of support among NPP members. His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, follows with 25.1%, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has gained notable traction with 12.5%. Other candidates include Kwabena Agyei Agyepong at 7.2%, Bryan Acheampong at 4.1%, and Francis Addai Nimo at 3.0%.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director and Head of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, cautioned that while Bawumia maintains a lead, his numbers suggest he should not be too comfortable. Dankwah observed that a 48.1% lead at this stage indicates that Bawumia still has considerable work to do to secure the party’s nomination. He described the competition as being much tighter than anticipated, with internal party dynamics likely to shift in the coming years.

Dankwah further commented on Kennedy Agyapong’s standing, suggesting that the lawmaker’s support has weakened compared to previous contests. He attributed this decline to the rise of Dr. Adutwum, who appears to be gaining influence within the party. According to Dankwah, Adutwum’s emergence in the race has made a noticeable impact, particularly among party members who may have otherwise supported Agyapong.

The race for the NPP flagbearer position remains an open contest, with various factions within the party aligning themselves with different candidates. Bawumia, despite his front-runner status, faces the challenge of uniting the party behind him, especially as competition intensifies. His ability to secure a decisive victory will depend on how effectively he consolidates support over the next few years.

With less than three years until the NPP selects its next leader, these early poll results provide insight into the current political landscape within the party. While Bawumia remains the favorite, the growing influence of other candidates signals that the final outcome is far from certain. As internal campaigns begin to take shape, the political climate within the NPP is expected to become even more competitive.
