Ghana Moves Up in Latest FIFA Ranking

Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has made progress in the latest FIFA rankings, marking their first upward movement since July 2024. Back then, they advanced from the 64th position to 60th. In the most recent ranking, Ghana has moved up from 77th to 76th globally, ending a stagnant period that lasted since November 2024.

The improvement follows Ghana’s strong start to the 2025 football calendar during the last international break. The Black Stars secured victories in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, defeating Chad and Madagascar. These wins marked their first triumphs since they last defeated the Central African Republic in June 2024.

As a result of these performances, Ghana has overtaken Israel, who dropped two places in the ranking. However, despite this positive development in the global ranking, their position in the African ranking remains unchanged. Ghana currently holds the 14th spot among African nations.

Head coach Otto Addo will be looking to continue this upward trajectory as the team returns to action later in the year. His focus will be on ensuring the team secures more victories to improve its position further in both the global and continental rankings.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian football has been in the spotlight for various reasons. The team is set to participate in the upcoming Unity Cup in London, where they will compete against Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. Additionally, Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil is preparing to make a return from injury after being sidelined for six weeks. Interestingly, Paintsil is also venturing into music, with his debut EP, Emergency, set to be released on April 4.

Ghana’s recent performances have sparked discussions about squad selection and player contributions. Defender Jerome Opoku expressed his surprise at starting in the match against Madagascar, while head coach Otto Addo has made comments suggesting he is considering alternative players over captain Andre Ayew in future call-ups. This has led to reactions from football analysts, including Fiifi Tackie, who described Addo’s remarks as shocking and disappointing.

Despite the ongoing debates, Addo remains optimistic about the team’s future. He believes the performances against Chad and Madagascar show that the Black Stars are on the right track. Striker Antoine Semenyo echoed this sentiment, stating that the team’s goal is to put Ghana back on the world football map and secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

While Ghana’s football management faces challenges, including reports that the Black Stars Management Committee members are currently not receiving salaries, the team remains focused on improving its performance. The recent FIFA ranking boost serves as motivation for both the players and the technical team as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
