Newly Recruited Teachers from Colleges of Education Demand Payment of Seven Months’ Salary Arrears

A group of newly appointed teachers who graduated from the Colleges of Education have expressed their frustration over prolonged delays in receiving their salaries, despite having actively worked for the past seven months. The educators, who were officially recruited in 2022, lament that the failure of authorities to process their salaries has placed them in severe financial distress.


These teachers, who are expected to shape the future of education, have been facing hardships due to systemic inefficiencies in the validation and payroll management processes. According to them, the delay in payments has not only caused uncertainty regarding their employment status but has also affected their overall morale and ability to sustain themselves.


In a formal petition addressed to the relevant educational and governmental bodies, the affected teachers pointed out significant inconsistencies in how salaries are processed. They argue that despite fulfilling their teaching responsibilities, they have yet to receive the compensation they are entitled to, leading to frustration and disillusionment.


Adomako Korankye, the leader of the newly recruited 2022 batch of teachers, voiced the collective concerns of his colleagues. He stated that the inability of authorities to resolve these salary-related challenges has left many in precarious financial situations. The educators, some of whom relocated to different regions for their teaching assignments, have struggled to meet their basic needs due to the prolonged delays.


Korankye emphasized that the teachers feel abandoned, as there has been little communication from relevant authorities about when their salaries will be paid. The lack of transparency has fueled anxiety among the group, with many questioning whether they will ever receive their rightful earnings.


He further stressed that these persistent issues have made it difficult for teachers to focus on their duties, as their financial difficulties take a toll on their well-being. Many of them rely on their salaries to pay rent, transportation, and other daily expenses, but the absence of payments has forced them to seek alternative means of survival.


The group is therefore calling on the government and all responsible institutions to urgently address the matter. They are urging authorities to expedite the payroll processing and validation procedures to ensure they receive their outstanding salaries without further delay.


In the broader context, salary arrears have been a recurrent issue in Ghana’s education sector, with many newly recruited teachers often facing payment delays. Such setbacks not only demotivate educators but also impact the overall quality of education, as financial insecurity can hinder their ability to perform effectively.


The teachers are hopeful that their petition will prompt immediate action, ensuring that they receive the financial support they need to continue their work with dedication. They warn that if their grievances remain unaddressed, they may be forced to take further action, which could disrupt educational activities.


Their plea serves as a reminder of the importance of timely salary payments for teachers, who play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future. The affected educators remain optimistic that authorities will intervene swiftly to rectify the situation and provide them with the compensation they have rightfully earned.
