UK Set to Host 2035 Women’s World Cup as Sole Bidder
The United Kingdom is on course to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup after FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that it was the only “valid” bidder. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland jointly submitted their expression of interest in March, aiming to bring the tournament to the home nations. Under FIFA’s rotation policy, the 2035 edition was designated for either Europe or Africa. Although Spain’s football federation had hinted at a joint bid with Portugal and Morocco, they failed to submit a formal proposal before the deadline.
Speaking at a UEFA congress in Belgrade, Infantino stated that the UK’s bid was the only one received for 2035, while the United States was the sole bidder for the 2031 edition. “The 2031 bid is the United States of America and potentially some other Concacaf members, and the 2035 bid is from Europe and the home nations,” he said. The formal bidding process requires the UK to submit a detailed proposal by the end of the year, with FIFA’s final vote set for 2026. In addition, Infantino confirmed that the 2031 Women’s World Cup would expand from 32 to 48 teams, reflecting the rapid growth of women’s football.
If the UK’s bid is officially accepted, the 2035 tournament will be the second World Cup hosted in the home nations, following England’s men’s tournament in 1966. FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham expressed excitement over the prospect, stating that the hard work now begins to develop a compelling bid. Hosting the World Cup in the UK is expected to elevate women’s football, boost grassroots development, and attract global attention to the sport. With preparations set to intensify, the UK is poised to deliver a world-class tournament that could further cement its legacy in football history.
