ECG’s ‘missing’ containers can be found – Former GPHA D-G

A former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Richard Anamoo, has expressed confidence that the missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) can be located. He stressed that institutions responsible for port operations maintain detailed records that should help track the containers' movements.

His remarks come amid increasing public concern regarding the disappearance of these containers, prompting widespread calls for an official inquiry into the matter. During an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, April 3, Anamoo assured the public that tracing the containers should not be a complex task.

He explained that GPHA systematically records all container movements, covering instances where they are transferred to other terminals, kept at off-site storage facilities, or auctioned due to prolonged stays at the port.

Anamoo elaborated that any containers transferred to another terminal would have documented records with the GPHA. Additionally, the shipping lines involved in the transportation of these containers would also possess records of their movements. If the containers had been unloaded within the port and their contents distributed while the empty containers were removed, or if they were moved to an external terminal before being auctioned, there would still be data tracking these activities.

The former GPHA boss assured that as long as the containers were within the jurisdiction of the GPHA, their records should be readily available. He urged relevant authorities to thoroughly examine existing documentation to ascertain their location and resolve the issue.

His comments align with previous assertions by other industry experts, including a former Managing Director of ECG, who emphasized that containers do not simply vanish without a trace. These statements highlight the need for a coordinated effort among the GPHA, ECG, and shipping companies to verify the whereabouts of the missing containers and address concerns surrounding their disappearance.

As the public continues to seek answers, the assurance from a former GPHA official provides a sense of optimism that the missing containers can indeed be accounted for. This development underscores the importance of maintaining accurate port records and ensuring transparency in handling cargo to prevent similar situations in the future.
