PHIL FODEN, A MANCHESTER CITY STAR, SAYS THAT LAMINE YAMAL IS THE YOUNG PLAYER HE LIKES TO WATCH

Phil Foden has won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Player of the Season award in 2024, making him one of the best young football players in the world. So out of the current crop of young players, which one does the 24-year-old Man City star enjoy watching? And how does he rate the difficulties Man City has faced this season? Foden, now 24, has played more than 300 games for City and is a regular starter. Therefore, he now finds it most enjoyable to watch which young footballer in the world. "There are so many talented players in world football right now," Foden told Sign Up - Into Football, a series presented by Damaris Cooke and Rolf Choutan, who are both deaf.

"The Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is someone I like. I enjoy watching him right now because I think he is doing really well for such a young age. Yamal, 17, has had a remarkable year, starting on a regular basis for Barcelona and assisting Spain in winning Euro 2024, where he was named Young Player of the Tournament. He won the Kopa Trophy last year, which honors the world's best player under the age of 21. Man City have struggled in the Premier League and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 16 this season, and Foden has not been able to replicate his award-winning performance. Asked about City’s form this season, Foden said: "I would put it down to a number of things. Obviously we have had a lot of injuries, all of the stuff we have won in the past has been so demanding on the body.

City are still in the running to win a trophy because they are playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-finals. Due to their position in the league, they are also fighting for a spot in the Champions League next season. Foden went on to say that "not much needs to change" when pondering how City can rebound in the upcoming season. I believe that is all we need to do and we should be back: just believe in the manager, try to keep players healthy, which is important because we have had a lot of injuries, maintain team spirit, be motivated to try again, and create a great environment. A first-time nomination may have come too late for some, like Phil Foden. But for the majority of the six first-time nominees, everything seems to be coming together at exactly the right time, with many years of promise to come.

Naturally, no nominee will be included among the final 11 winners (the 2024 winners will be announced next week). But a glance at the ages here, ranging from 17-24, suggests that the select group might be award contenders for the foreseeable future.

Lamine Yamal might be the only player who can even come close to being called "the next Leo Messi" by many people. In truth, this has been coming for a while. Then-manager Xavi handed Yamal his Barca debut in 2023, and it was immediately clear just how good he was, even at 15. Now, he's practically ancient at 17, and tearing things up for club and country. Yamal has the potential to win multiple Ballons d'Or in the future because he is quick, skilled, and very mature for his age.
