Enugu Illegal Mining : A Threat To National Grid Stability

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has raised a red flag over the menace of illegal mining activities in Enugu, warning that the practice poses a significant threat to the stability of the national electricity grid. Dr. Thomas Inugonum, TCN's General Manager (Transmission) for the Enugu region, has highlighted the dangers of illegal excavation near transmission towers, particularly in the New Centenary City Estate of Enugu.

According to Dr. Inugonum, the excavations, which involve digging around tower bases, have weakened critical infrastructure, putting the entire grid at risk. He warned that these actions could result in tower collapses, particularly during storms or strong winds, potentially causing widespread power outages. The situation is further compounded by the vandalism of a power substation in Okigwe, Imo State, which was stripped of all its equipment, causing a loss of over N20 billion.

The consequences of illegal mining activities in Enugu are far-reaching and devastating. If immediate action is not taken to halt these activities, the region's power supply, especially to the northern parts of Nigeria, could be jeopardized. The economic implications of such an eventuality are dire, with businesses and industries relying heavily on a stable power supply to operate.

Furthermore, the environmental impact of illegal mining activities cannot be overstated. The destruction of natural habitats, pollution of waterways, and loss of biodiversity are just a few of the devastating consequences of this practice. It is imperative that the government and other stakeholders take immediate action to address this issue and prevent further damage to the environment.

TCN has moved quickly to energize other substations to avoid a repeat of the setback caused by the vandalism of the power substation in Okigwe, Imo State. The company has also called on the state government and civil defense forces to intervene and prevent further damage.

In addition, TCN has implemented various measures to prevent the collapse of the national grid. These measures include the use of advanced monitoring and control systems to detect and respond to issues promptly, as well as the deployment of the Generation Dip/Loss Detection System (GLDS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance grid stability and reliability.

The government has a critical role to play in addressing the issue of illegal mining activities in Enugu. The government must enforce laws and regulations governing mining activities in the country, ensuring that all mining operations are carried out in a safe and responsible manner.

Furthermore, the government must provide alternative livelihoods for communities that rely on illegal mining activities, ensuring that they are not forced to engage in this practice due to economic necessity. The government must also educate the public on the dangers of illegal mining activities and the importance of preserving the national grid.

Illegal mining activities have had a devastating impact on local communities in Enugu. The practice has led to the destruction of homes, farmlands, and other critical infrastructure, leaving many communities without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

Furthermore, illegal mining activities have also had a significant impact on the health and well-being of local communities. The practice has led to the pollution of waterways, soil, and air, resulting in the spread of diseases and other health problems.

To address the issue of illegal mining activities in Enugu, it is imperative that sustainable mining practices are adopted. This includes the use of environmentally friendly mining methods, the rehabilitation of mined lands, and the provision of fair compensation to affected communities.

Furthermore, sustainable mining practices must also take into account the social and economic impacts of mining activities on local communities. This includes the provision of alternative livelihoods, the promotion of local economic development, and the protection of human rights.

Civil society organizations have a critical role to play in addressing the issue of illegal mining activities in Enugu. These organizations must work to educate the public on the dangers of illegal mining activities and the importance of preserving the national grid.

Furthermore, civil society organizations must also work to hold the government and other stakeholders accountable for their actions. This includes advocating for the enforcement of laws and regulations governing mining activities, as well as promoting sustainable mining practices.

To address the issue of illegal mining activities in Enugu, it is imperative that a comprehensive approach is adopted. This includes:

- Enforcing Laws and Regulations: The government must enforce laws and regulations governing mining activities in the country, ensuring that all mining operations are carried out in a safe and responsible manner.

- Providing Alternative Livelihoods: The government must provide alternative livelihoods for communities that rely on illegal mining activities, ensuring that they are not forced to engage in this practice due to economic necessity.
