Real Madrid won their 15th UEFA Champions League title last year with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Now UEFA has released its financial report for the 2023/24 campaign and it is time to find out which clubs won the most prize money in UEFA competitions last term. There are plenty of surprises, with English sides struggling to earn as much as Madrid or PSG.

The total prize fund for the last tournament was more than €2 billion, and that amount is set to increase again this term following an increase in the number of clubs included under the new format.

Real Madrid stormed to victory in last season's UEFA Champions League, lifting their 15th crown after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0.

The prize-money rankings reflect their success, with Los Blancos returning €138.8 million to the Spanish capital. UEFA's top earners in 2022/23 were Manchester City, but Madrid earned €3.9 million more than them in the previous season. Paris Saint-Germain may have been eliminated in the semi-finals, but they were second on the prize money list with €122.4 million.

Dortmund, last year's losers, and German powerhouse Bayern Munich came in third and fourth, earning €120.7 million and €120.4 million, respectively. After winning €110 million in UEFA competition last season, Manchester City finished fifth. Arsenal earned the most money in England, surpassing City with a prize pot of €94 million. Third place was occupied by Manchester United, who won €60.7 million.

With €34.4 million, Newcastle received the least amount in prize money. The team's pride and prestige have been damaged, and United has suffered a significant financial setback as a result. GOAL counts how much the Red Devils' embarrassing early exit really cost... United also miss out on big money-spinning matches in the knockout rounds. The Sports Journal says that United made £3.96 million ($4.9 million) on average per Premier League game in 2022, more than any other English team, and that number will rise to £4.2 million ($5.2 million) this season after the club raised ticket prices by 5%. The number would be even higher if United had advanced to the round of 16 and been drawn against a massive team like Real Madrid or Barcelona. So that's a potential £12.6m ($15.8m) at least in matchday revenue that could have been secured if United had gone as far as the semi-finals.

Even though there would have been less demand for tickets and prices, the club could have recouped some of that money if they had dropped out of the Europa League.
