Second year student shot by classmate at ADASS, Kumasi
A tragic incident occurred at the Adventist Senior High School (ADASS) in Kumasi on the morning of Friday, April 4, 2025, where a second-year female student was shot in the head by a male classmate. The incident unfolded shortly after the morning lessons while students were still in the classroom.
According to reports gathered by JoyNews, the suspect—a fellow classmate of the victim—pulled out a pistol and, after being challenged by others in the class who questioned whether the gun was real, fired it at the girl, causing critical injuries. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.
Immediately after the shooting, the injured student was rushed to Kwadaso SDA Hospital, but due to the severity of her condition, she was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for urgent medical care. Her current condition remains critical as doctors work to save her life.
The suspect was promptly arrested by the Suame District Police, who are currently investigating the case. It’s unclear how the student obtained the firearm or how he managed to bring it into the school undetected.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the suspect may have shown off the weapon to classmates after the lesson, which led to some doubting its authenticity. This challenge allegedly provoked him to pull the trigger, resulting in the horrific act.
The incident has left students, teachers, and parents in shock and has sparked discussions about safety in schools, particularly how a student was able to possess and bring a loaded firearm onto school premises. Many believe this incident reflects a broader issue of increasing youth violence and access to dangerous weapons.
Comments from the public have pointed to various causes, including the influence of violent media and movies, lack of stringent laws to deter such acts, and a weakening moral compass among the youth. One commentator on the platform mentioned that people often underestimate the gravity of taking a life, stressing that the consequences for such actions need to be harsher to prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the school and community are grappling with the aftermath of this violent event, calling for tighter security measures and psychological support for students affected by the trauma.
