Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu Named Acting Government Statistician
President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as the Acting Government Statistician, with the final confirmation subject to consultations with the Council of State. This interim appointment was disclosed in an official statement released by the Presidency on Friday.
Dr. Iddrisu is a highly experienced economist and public sector expert, known for his significant contributions to Ghana’s economic policy development. He currently serves as the Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance, where he has led several strategic initiatives in macroeconomic analysis and policy formulation.
In his current capacity, Dr. Iddrisu is responsible for coordinating national efforts in economic forecasting, conducting research on policy matters, and managing assessments of both the real and external sectors of Ghana’s economy. His work has been crucial in informing decisions that shape the country’s financial and economic direction.
Dr. Iddrisu’s impressive public service career spans over a decade, during which he has held multiple high-ranking roles in the Ministry of Finance. From 2013 to 2019, he was the Director of the Economic Research and Forecasting Division, overseeing long-term economic modeling and projections. Prior to that, between 2010 and 2013, he served as the Acting Director of the Real Sector Division, focusing on sectoral performance, productivity, and growth trends.
In addition to his government duties, Dr. Iddrisu represents the Ministry of Finance on several key boards and technical committees, where his insight helps shape critical national policies. He is also actively involved in academia, lecturing part-time at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he shares his vast knowledge with upcoming professionals in economics and policy studies.
Academically, Dr. Iddrisu is highly accomplished. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan. He also has a Master of Public Administration in Public and Economic Policy from the London School of Economics. Additionally, he earned an MPhil in Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with French from the University of Ghana.
His expertise extends beyond Ghana’s borders, having worked as a consultant for renowned international organizations, including Oxfam GB and the World Bank. These engagements have further solidified his standing as a respected authority in economic research and public policy.
As Acting Government Statistician, Dr. Iddrisu is expected to head the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), where he will play a critical role in producing reliable data to support national planning and informed policymaking. His appointment marks a strategic move to bolster evidence-based governance and enhance Ghana’s statistical infrastructure.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Minister for Government Communications, praised Dr. Iddrisu’s appointment, highlighting his consistent track record of leadership and competence. He expressed confidence that under Dr. Iddrisu’s leadership, Ghana’s statistical systems would be significantly strengthened, contributing to effective governance and national development.
Once his appointment is formally approved by the Council of State, Dr. Iddrisu is expected to steer GSS toward achieving its mandate of delivering timely and accurate data to drive development.
