President Mahama is always a contentious politician in Ghanaian politics, and people have varying perceptions of his political fate.

A recent admission from Maurice Ampaw, a well-known lawyer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, provides fresh information on the in-house strategies of the NPP leading up to the 2024 elections.

During an open interview on Wontumi FM, Ampaw revealed that the NPP had always viewed Mahama as their greatest political rival, despite the fact that the party had campaigned openly to downplay his importance.

Unlike the narrative peddled by the NPP, which sought to present Mahama as a tired, old-school leader with little chance of coming back to power, Ampaw's revelation revealed a different truth. In his opinion, behind the scenes, the NPP knew that Mahama was not to be trifled with.

"We knew Mahama was our greatest threat," Ampaw emphasized, pointing out that within the party, the party feared him and respected him.

He agreed that the NPP knew the enormous task they would have to surmount should Mahama be elected as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in the 2024 election.

Ampaw continued to elaborate that the NPP's public stance against Mahama was purely strategic.

The party had sought to raise suspicion among the electorate, pitting Mahama as being detached and not qualified to hold office. "The plan was simple," Ampaw went on to say, "We had to ruin his reputation with the people.

We had to sow seeds of doubt within their minds. Not because we believed he had nothing to offer — but because we knew he had too much to offer."

This revelation on the part of Ampaw illuminated further the behind-closed-doors political maneuverings fought out by the NPP, one that portrayed the degree to which they did respect Mahama, if only in terms of opposition to what was offered outwardly

. It also demonstrates the complex, often dirty field of political campaigneering wherein appearance tends to be a misguiding factor, and strategy exists on the tenuous thin thread of fear and respect.
