Police Rescue 14 Benue Links Passengers Kidnapped In Otukpo

The Benue State Police Command has successfully rescued 14 passengers who were kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Thursday evening in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state. The passengers were traveling on a Benue Links bus when it was attacked near the Otukpo Burnt Bricks area, resulting in the death of the driver and one passenger.

According to the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, the bus was ambushed by armed kidnappers on April 3, around 8:30 pm. The kidnappers took away 14 passengers, leaving behind the driver and a passenger with gunshot injuries. The police, in collaboration with the State Civil Protection Guard, quickly responded to the scene and launched a search for the kidnapped victims within the nearby forest.

On April 4, at about 3 pm, the police engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel, overpowering them and causing them to flee and abandon their captives. Unfortunately, the kidnappers had inflicted machete cuts on two of the victims before the rescue. The 14 rescued victims were taken to the hospital, where one was confirmed dead, and the others are currently receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Steve Yabanet, commiserated with the families of the deceased and pledged to bring the perpetrators to book. He also urged the people of Otukpo to look out for suspects with gunshot injuries and report to the police, as many of the bandits received gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire.

The police are currently investigating the incident and working to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The rescue operation is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the Benue State Police Command and the State Civil Protection Guard.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of support for the victims and their families. The Benue State government and other stakeholders have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged to provide support to those affected.

The incident highlights the need for increased security measures in the state, particularly in the Otukpo area. The police and other security agencies are working to enhance security and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The rescue of the 14 Benue Links passengers is a welcome relief, but it also underscores the need for continued efforts to address the security challenges facing the state. The police and other stakeholders must work together to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice and that the victims receive the support they need.
