Kwesi Aning Urges Caution in Handling of Sensitive Information Amid Minority’s Flight Allegations
Security analyst Dr. Kwesi Aning has expressed serious concerns about how some Members of Parliament are handling sensitive security-related information. His comments come in response to recent allegations made by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. Aning acknowledged that while parliamentary oversight of national security is vital, it must be conducted with professionalism and a high level of discretion—particularly by individuals in positions of authority and trust. He emphasized that those with security clearance must be especially cautious about how they manage information that could impact national security.
He stated, “I can discuss such matters as a scholar or civil society activist, but a Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior—who has direct oversight over sensitive security institutions and may possess security clearance—must approach such issues with greater responsibility.” Dr. Aning warned that the careless handling of sensitive information could have serious national implications.
He also criticized the growing politicization of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, suggesting that such behavior undermines its integrity and effectiveness. According to Dr. Aning, Parliamentarians in sensitive roles should be more mindful of how they use their access to information. “We need to elevate the conversation around how individuals in key positions—with access to critical security data—should behave. The responsibility that comes with that access should not be taken lightly,” he stressed.
These comments were made in response to Rev. Fordjour’s controversial claims regarding two aircraft that recently departed Ghana for Gran Canaria. He alleged that the planes—a private jet and an air ambulance—might have been carrying large amounts of cash and potentially illegal substances. The nature of the claims has triggered public alarm and raised suspicions of possible drug trafficking and money laundering.
The allegations have not gone unchallenged. Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, responded by categorically denying any wrongdoing associated with the flights. He acknowledged the existence of the two aircraft but insisted there was no credible evidence to support the claims that they were involved in illegal activities.
Kwakye Ofosu described the accusations as unfounded and warned against making such serious allegations without proper verification. He pointed out that such statements, particularly when made by public officials, can have far-reaching consequences for the country’s international image and relations.
In light of the controversy, Dr. Aning urged a more responsible and professional approach to security matters, especially when they are raised in the public domain. He reiterated that Members of Parliament, especially those with oversight roles and access to classified information, must exercise discretion and ensure that their actions do not compromise national security or incite unnecessary public fear.
The incident has sparked wider debate about the proper role of Parliament in overseeing national security matters, and how elected officials should responsibly manage sensitive information. Many are calling for more rigorous standards and training to help public officials handle such responsibilities with the care and seriousness they deserve.
