Kwesi Aning Cautions MPs on Handling of Sensitive Security Information Amid Flight Allegations

Security expert Dr. Kwesi Aning has expressed concern over the manner in which some Members of Parliament are managing sensitive security-related information. His remarks follow allegations made by Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, regarding two aircraft—an air ambulance and a private jet—that departed Ghana for Gran Canaria, allegedly carrying cash and potentially illicit substances.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on April 5, Dr. Aning emphasized that while the role of Parliament in providing oversight on national security matters is crucial, it must be carried out with a high level of responsibility and professionalism. He highlighted that individuals who hold positions with security clearance should handle such sensitive information with the necessary caution and discretion.

Referring to the actions of Rev. Fordjour, Dr. Aning noted that while civil society members and scholars may have some freedom in how they discuss such topics, public officials, particularly those serving on critical committees like the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, must be held to a higher standard. As ranking members with potential access to classified or sensitive information, they are expected to approach such matters with greater care.

Dr. Aning went on to criticize what he called the politicization of the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament. He argued that the current atmosphere, where political interests seem to overshadow responsible governance, is dangerous, especially when it comes to national security. He called for a more elevated and informed discussion on how people in sensitive positions manage the information they are entrusted with, especially if it pertains to the safety and security of the state.

The controversy arose after Rev. Fordjour suggested that two aircraft which left Ghana for Gran Canaria might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering. These claims have drawn significant public attention and concern. However, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected the allegations, labeling them as baseless. He stated that while the aircraft in question did land and later leave Ghana, there is no evidence suggesting they were used for any unlawful activities.

Dr. Aning’s caution serves as a reminder of the importance of careful handling of security matters by public officials, especially when such information can have national and international implications.
