Musicians from Nigeria and South Africa earned a combined total of 59
million dollars from Spotify in 2024, as demand for African music continued to
grow worldwide. The report, released by Spotify, shows a sharp increase in
earnings for artists from both countries, reflecting their rising global
appeal.
According to the figures shared by the Swedish streaming giant, Nigerian
artists earned more than 38 million dollars in royalties last year. This amount
is more than double what they earned in 2023. South African musicians followed
with 21 million dollars in earnings, marking a 54 percent increase from the
previous year. These numbers are a strong indication that African music, led by
these two nations, is gaining global recognition and financial rewards.
Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy,
said more African artists are now able to earn a living through their music.
She stated that the platform has noticed significant growth not only among
top-tier stars but also among mid-level and upcoming musicians. These artists
are building strong fan bases both at home and abroad, thanks to the rise of
digital music platforms.
While Spotify paid out nearly 10 billion dollars in royalties across the
globe in 2024, Africa still accounts for a small portion of that amount.
However, the continent is quickly becoming a fast-growing market. The success
of African artists like Burna Boy from Nigeria and Tyla from South Africa, who
are topping international charts, is playing a key role in this growth.
The report also highlighted how African music is spreading beyond the
continent. Nigerian artists saw a 49 percent increase in international
streaming over the past three years. South African musicians performed even
better with a 104 percent rise in global streams during the same period. These
numbers show that more people around the world are listening to and enjoying
African music than ever before.
Spotify noted that over 250 million playlists created by users now include
at least one Nigerian song. Similarly, more than 220 million playlists feature
South African music. These figures show how often African sounds are being
added to personal and shared playlists globally, giving artists a wider reach
and more opportunities to earn money.
Earnings for individual artists are also improving. The number of Nigerian
artists who earned at least 10 million Naira annually through Spotify has
doubled compared to last year. Since 2022, that number has tripled. South
African artists are also seeing progress, with the number of musicians earning
between 100,000 and 500,000 Rand rising steadily over the last three years.
This shows how music streaming is not just boosting fame, but also helping
artists make better incomes.
Genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano continue to gain popularity beyond
Africa. These styles of music are being embraced in Europe, America, and other
parts of the world. This growing interest is driving more revenue to the
continent’s artists. Many international fans are drawn to the rhythm, energy,
and uniqueness of African music, making it a key player in the global music
scene.
Spotify’s recent data clearly shows that Africa, especially Nigeria and
South Africa, is rising in the global music industry. More artists from the
continent are being streamed internationally, and more money is being made from
those streams. With consistent growth and increasing international recognition,
the future of African music looks even more promising.
