Paris Saint-Germain have officially been crowned French champions for the
2024/25 season, after a narrow 1-0 win against Angers at the Parc des Princes
on Saturday. The victory, secured by a second-half goal from Desire Doue,
sealed PSG’s 13th Ligue 1 title and their fourth in a row. The result confirmed
their dominance in the French top flight, as they now sit 21 points clear of
Monaco with six games still to be played.
It was a sunny afternoon in Paris, and although the celebrations were somewhat
muted, the win carried deep meaning for the players, fans, and club staff. This
triumph adds to the list of trophies won since the club was taken over by Qatar
Sports Investments in 2011, marking the eleventh time they have won the league
in the last 13 years.
PSG captain Marquinhos, who has now lifted ten league titles since joining
the club in 2013, expressed pride in the team’s efforts. Speaking to beIN
Sports, the Brazilian defender said the title was a reward for consistency,
hard work, and commitment shown throughout the season. Although Marquinhos did
not feature in the match due to a suspension, he remained an important figure
in the celebrations.
The only goal of the match came just ten minutes after the halftime break.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia delivered a precise cross that Doue finished confidently,
notching his eleventh goal of the season. Signed from Rennes, Doue has proven
to be a key player for PSG, and his goal on Saturday was one of the most
important of his career so far.
Luis Enrique, the head coach of PSG, was lifted into the air by his coaching
team after the final whistle, as players took a lap of honour around the pitch
to thank fans. However, the official trophy ceremony has been postponed. With a
UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Aston Villa coming up, the
focus quickly shifted to European ambitions.
Luis Enrique continues to maintain a perfect domestic record since taking
over the team. Under his guidance, PSG have not only won league titles but also
performed well in the French Cup and other domestic competitions.
Beyond securing the title early, PSG are now chasing another major
milestone. With 23 wins and five draws from 28 matches, they remain unbeaten in
the league. If they maintain this run, they could become the first team in
Ligue 1 history to complete a full season without a loss. The closest a French
club has come to this record was in the 1994/95 season when Nantes went 32
matches unbeaten before losing one in a 38-game season.
This year, Ligue 1 is a 34-game competition after the number of teams was
reduced from 20 to 18. PSG will not return to league action until April 19 when
they face Le Havre at home. Their upcoming away match against Nantes was pushed
to April 22, giving the team time to recover between the two legs of their
Champions League tie against Villa.
PSG’s top scorer, Ousmane Dembele, who has netted 32 goals in all
competitions this season, started the match on the bench. He had scored twice
earlier in the week during a 4-2 French Cup semi-final victory over Dunkerque.
Also rested was Bradley Barcola, the team’s second-highest scorer with 18
goals. Despite the absence of these key players from the starting lineup, the
team did enough to win.
The game was not without its tense moments. Angers forward Esteban Lepaul
had a good chance to open the scoring in the first half, but his run was
stopped by a strong challenge from PSG defender Willian Pacho. The referee saw
nothing wrong with the tackle, and the match continued.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Brest pulled off a dramatic injury-time win against
Monaco, beating them 2-1. That result opens the door for Marseille to move into
second place if they beat Toulouse on Sunday. Lyon also hosted Lille in a key
fixture with major implications for Champions League qualification next season.
Back in Paris, the mood was joyful but focused. With another title in the
bag, PSG have their eyes on making more history. Completing an unbeaten season
would be a unique achievement for a club already known for rewriting records in
French football.
