Sheila Azuntaba, a former Miss Ghana and a seasoned financial expert, has
been named the new Deputy Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG).
Her appointment, which took effect on March 26, 2025, marks a significant step
forward in her professional journey and signals a new era of leadership in
Ghana’s banking sector.
Azuntaba’s elevation was made public in an official letter signed by Ghana’s
Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and addressed to the Chairman of the
Board of CBG. The letter also announced the nomination of Dr. Naomi Wolali
Kwetey as the Acting Managing Director of the bank. The board has been
instructed to regularize both appointments in line with the Companies Act of
2019 and the bank’s constitution.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Sheila Azuntaba expressed her deep
gratitude for the opportunity, attributing her success to divine timing. She
shared her excitement about the future of the bank under Dr. Kwetey’s
leadership and pledged her full support and dedication to the role. She also
thanked President John Dramani Mahama for nominating her and acknowledged the
inspiration she draws from other women in leadership, including Vice President
Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Azuntaba comes into this role with over two decades of experience in the
banking and financial services industry. Her career has taken her across West
and East Africa, including key roles in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. At
Citigroup’s Global Transaction Services Unit in Nigeria, she served as
Assistant Vice President, where she contributed to innovative product
development and strategic marketing.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sheila Azuntaba is widely recognized
for her work in women’s financial empowerment. As the founder and CEO of
Innovative Microfinance Ltd, she has impacted the lives of over 100,000
individuals, especially women in Ghana’s Northern Region. Her microfinance
initiatives have provided small loans and financial education, giving many
families the tools to improve their economic standing.
In previous interviews, Azuntaba has shared her strong passion for
empowering women, especially in underserved communities. She believes that when
women are given the right support, they can uplift entire households and
communities. Her drive stems from personal experiences and the resilience she
witnessed in northern Ghana, where many women juggle multiple roles just to
provide for their families.
Sheila’s journey into public recognition began in 1996 when she became the
first woman from the northern part of Ghana to win the Miss Ghana title. That
milestone gave her a national platform, but it was her dedication to service
and professional growth that cemented her reputation. She credits her mother
for instilling in her the values of independence, strength, and focus—traits
that have guided her throughout her life.
Her academic credentials further reflect her dedication to excellence. She
holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Westminster in
London and an MBA in Finance from Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow,
Scotland. These qualifications have been critical in shaping her approach to
leadership and financial management.
At Consolidated Bank Ghana, a state-owned universal bank regulated by the
Bank of Ghana, Azuntaba is expected to play a key role in strengthening the
institution’s operational and strategic performance. Her blend of corporate
experience, local insights, and passion for development places her in a strong
position to help steer the bank towards long-term growth.
Her appointment comes at a time when there is increasing demand for
diversity and inclusion in corporate leadership, especially within the
financial sector. Azuntaba's story is a strong example of how determination,
education, and service can lead to impactful leadership. Her track record
suggests she is well prepared to take on this responsibility, and her presence
at CBG could pave the way for more women to assume top positions in Ghana’s
financial industry.
This appointment has been met with widespread praise, not only for her
qualifications but for what it represents for the future of inclusive
leadership in Ghana. Her vision, experience, and passion for impact-driven work
could contribute meaningfully to the transformation of the bank and the
industry at large.
