Kusaug Youth Express Disappointment Over Mahama’s Inaction on Bawku Conflict

Agitated youth from the Kusaug area have voiced strong dissatisfaction with President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the ongoing Bawku conflict. Despite their overwhelming support for him in the last election, the group says they feel abandoned, accusing the President of failing to deliver on his promise to restore peace to the troubled region.

The youth stated that during his campaign, President Mahama pledged to resolve the long-standing conflict in Bawku, a commitment that earned him massive support from the Kusasi community. According to them, the community gave their votes entirely to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), rejecting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in hopes that Mahama would bring lasting peace. However, three months into his presidency, they claim the situation has only deteriorated, with violence escalating and lives continually being lost.

At a press briefing, the group reminded the President of his previous recognition of Naana Asigri Azorka II as the rightful chief of Kusaug, questioning why peace efforts have stalled since then. “Everyone knows Naana Asigri Azorka II is the legitimate chief. Mr President, what has changed?” they asked, expressing shock and disappointment over the slow pace of action.

The group painted a grim picture of the security situation in Bawku under Mahama’s leadership. They reported that more than 18 people, including women and children, have died due to the ongoing violence since he took office. This, they say, stands in stark contrast to the President’s promise of restoring calm to the area.

Accusing Mahama of using the conflict for political gain, the youth expressed a broader frustration with politicians who, they claim, make promises during campaigns but fail to act once in power. “We now understand that politicians only exploit the Bawku crisis to win votes. They don’t care about finding real solutions,” the group declared.

In a bold warning to political leaders, the youth hinted at possible voter apathy in the 2028 elections if their concerns continue to be ignored. “Politicians will be shocked to find empty ballot boxes in the next election. We are tired of the lies and broken promises,” they concluded, urging authorities to take their demands seriously and work toward meaningful peace in the region.
