The community came together to bid a final farewell to Joana Deladem Yabani, a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student whose life was tragically cut short. Her burial service, held at the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God auditorium in Ashongman, was a somber occasion marked by sorrow and heavy hearts.

A Life Remembered

Family, friends, and sympathizers gathered to pay their last respects to Joana, a kind and quiet young woman. Colleagues, schoolmates, and dignitaries, including Cyril Nsiah and George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, were in attendance. Representatives from Joana's alma maters, Achimota School and KNUST, also paid their respects.

A Call to Action Against Domestic Abuse

Adeline Baidoo, President of the Ghana Women Forum and a lecturer at Accra Technical University, shared her personal experience with domestic abuse. "I was once in a toxic relationship," she revealed. "I left when my husband started beating me. If I hadn't left, I don't know what would have happened to me by now." She urged women to prioritize their safety and not suffer in silence in abusive relationships.

The Circumstances Surrounding Joana's Death

Joana's lifeless body was discovered on February 27 near the Rehabilitation and Disability Centre on the KNUST campus. Preliminary police investigations implicated her alleged boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, who has since been arrested and is currently standing trial for her death. The prosecution has submitted an amended charge sheet and autopsy report to the court, and the case is ongoing.

Justice in Progress

The court has adjourned the case until April 1, 2025, to allow time for the Attorney-General's advice and additional legal proceedings. KNUST management has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served in a manner that fulfills the expectations of the bereaved family and all concerned parties.

Conclusion

Joana Deladem Yabani's tragic death serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and well-being, particularly in abusive relationships. As the community comes to terms with this devastating loss, the pursuit of justice remains a top priority. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched during her time at KNUST and beyond.
