A tragic incident has occurred in Kukpalgu, a community within the Tatale-Sanguli District of the Northern Region, where a pregnant woman was shot and killed by unknown gunmen. The attack took place as a group of people was returning from a prayer session. According to reports gathered by JoyNews, the woman was fatally shot in the stomach and died instantly. Two others sustained serious injuries during the attack.
The injured individuals were initially taken to a herbal center in Gbande for treatment but were later referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced care. One of the victims was shot in the hand, while the other suffered a gunshot wound that pierced through her back and exited through her chest.
Although the motive behind the shooting is still unknown, local residents suspect the attack could be connected to political tensions in the area. Specifically, there has been unrest following the appointment of a non-Dagomba individual as the District Chief Executive (DCE), a decision that many locals in Zabzugu found disappointing. The expectation had been that a native would be appointed, and the release of the list of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) seems to have sparked discontent.
This incident has added to the growing tension in the region, plunging the community into a state of fear and mourning. Residents are calling on security agencies and local authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and implement measures to prevent further violence.
This marks the second major violent occurrence in the area within three months. On February 20, 2025, a violent clash between farmers and hunters resulted in the death of one person and left several others injured. Although peace-building efforts were initiated after that incident, this latest attack has reignited fears of instability.
The community is now urging the District Security Committee (DISEC) and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to take swift action to restore peace and provide lasting solutions to the underlying causes of the recurring violence. The call is for both immediate security intervention and long-term conflict resolution to safeguard lives and ensure the region does not spiral into further chaos.
