A Financial Analyst, Mike Asamoa, has urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged misuse of the Bank of Ghana's currency boxes. This call comes amidst reports of certain individuals using these boxes in ways that implicate the Bank or undermine public trust in its operations.

According to Asamoa, the Bank of Ghana's currency import operations utilize highly durable wooden boxes designed specifically to ensure the safe transportation of currency. These boxes are robust, reusable, and well-suited to withstand wear and tear associated with logistics. Occasionally, these boxes are issued to commercial banks, which may later return them empty or make them available for non-currency-related use.

Asamoa emphasized that due to their durability, some members of the public have repurposed these boxes for domestic and commercial uses, including storage and transport. However, he noted that reports have emerged indicating that certain individuals are using these boxes in ways that implicate the Bank or undermine public trust in its operations.

Asamoa's comments follow the discovery of a counterfeiting operation in Sarpeiman, a suburb of the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region. The operation was found to have official Bank of Ghana cash boxes on the premises. The National Security Secretariat confirmed that the cash boxes found were genuine Bank of Ghana property.

Investigations revealed that the facility housed ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollar notes, as well as fake gold bars and gold-plated metals. The key suspect behind the syndicate is a man identified only as "Alhaji." National Security operatives say "Alhaji" is a central figure in the operation, with evidence directly linking him to the counterfeit production hub.

Asamoa stressed that the misuse of the Bank of Ghana's currency boxes for criminal activities must be thoroughly investigated by law enforcement agencies, and all persons found culpable must be prosecuted. He emphasized that the use of these boxes in any manner that could suggest official sanction could compromise the reputation of the Bank.

The Bank of Ghana has not commented on the matter, but Asamoa's call for a thorough investigation highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of the Bank's currency boxes. The incident has raised concerns about the potential for corruption and the need for robust measures to prevent the misuse of official equipment.
