Ghanaian players abroad: Kudus gets assist against Bournemouth as Sulemana suffers historic relegation

Ghanaian players across Europe are beginning to discover their fates as the season enters its business end, with both relegation and European qualification at stake.Ernest Nuamah’s season appears to have come to an abrupt end after he sustained an injury.

Here is a wrap-up of their performances over the weekend:

England

Kamaldeen Sulemana registered his first assist of the season for Southampton, but it was not enough, as a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday confirmed the Saints’ relegation with seven games to spare—the earliest in Premier League history.

Sulemana, who has one goal and one assist in the league, will be going down with Southampton for the second time, having previously done so two seasons prior to the 2024/25 campaign.

Mohammed Kudus ended a 14-game goal involvement drought by providing an assist in West Ham’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. The midfielder has three goals and two assists in 25 league matches, with his last goal coming three months ago in a 1-1 draw against Brighton on December 21, 2024.

Antoine Semenyo featured for the full duration of the match for Bournemouth.

Thomas Partey remained on the bench for Arsenal, who saw their slim title hopes take another blow following a 1-1 draw against Everton on Saturday.

Spain

Inaki Williams completed the full match as Athletic Club played out a goalless draw away at Villarreal.

Defender Joseph Aidoo made his return from injury, coming off the bench to play 30 minutes for Real Valladolid in their 4-0 loss to Getafe. He had been sidelined for over a month.

France Winger Ernest Nuamah was forced off after just seven minutes during Lyon’s 2-1 victory over Lille in Ligue 1 on Saturday. There are concerns that the 21-year-old may have suffered a ligament rupture, potentially ruling him out for an extended period.

Nuamah had been enjoying a strong run of form, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 2025 for both club and country.

Andre Ayew made a late appearance, coming on for the final 16 minutes of Le Havre’s 2-0 win over Montpellier, a result that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Denmark

Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi delivered a man-of-the-match performance for Nordsjaelland, despite their 1-0 defeat to Copenhagen in the Danish league.
