The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a significant shift in its immediate agenda, prioritizing the investigation of an alleged drug trafficking scandal over internal party matters concerning former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Adwoa Safo. This decision, revealed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, comes as the party grapples with allegations that have sparked national and international concern.
Originally scheduled to convene on Monday, April 7, the NPP postponed its meeting to address the gravity of the drug trafficking allegations. According to Frimpong, the party deems this matter a critical issue of national interest, demanding urgent attention and direct engagement with the government. He emphasized that diverting focus to internal disciplinary matters involving Adwoa Safo would be inappropriate at this crucial time.
“There is not going to be any discussion on whether or not Honourable Adwoa Safo is going to appear before any committee or not. What the party is going to discuss is the running issue with respect to the alleged drug trafficking in our country,” Frimpong stated, underscoring the party's commitment to prioritizing the scandal.
The General Secretary reiterated that the NPP would not allow its attention to be swayed from the drug trafficking issue, asserting that the party’s primary concern is to seek clarity and accountability from the government. “Our priority now is the alleged drug trafficking scandal, not internal party politics. Ghanaians deserve answers from the government. We expect transparency, accountability, and clarity on this matter,” he added.
Frimpong expressed disappointment in the government’s handling of the situation, raising concerns about inconsistencies in the official narrative. He believes these discrepancies have tarnished Ghana’s international reputation and called for a more transparent and accountable response. “The rank and file of our party have expressed disappointment at the worrying behaviour of this government. There are several mind-boggling questions we expect the government to answer. The attempt to sweep these critical issues under the carpet is unacceptable,” Frimpong asserted.
He further criticized the government’s silence on the matter, questioning the lack of official communication from the country’s security agencies, despite the international attention the allegations have garnered. “This is worrying and embarrassing for our country. It is shocking that, when this issue has become an international topic, we are yet to hear any official communication from our security agencies,” he lamented.
This announcement precedes Adwoa Safo’s arrival at the NPP headquarters, accompanied by her supporters, to attend a scheduled appearance before the party’s Disciplinary Committee. Safo expressed disappointment that the committee had failed to officially notify her about the postponement of her hearing. This situation adds another layer of complexity to the party’s current focus, as it attempts to navigate both the drug trafficking scandal and internal disciplinary matters.
The NPP’s decision to prioritize the drug trafficking allegations reflects the seriousness with which the party views the matter. It also highlights the party’s desire to hold the government accountable and restore public trust. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the NPP’s demands for transparency and accountability, and how the party will address the ongoing internal issues involving Adwoa Safo. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining the course of these intertwined events.
