The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has clarified that its attention is currently
fixed on addressing a matter of national concern involving an alleged drug
trafficking scandal. The party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong,
stated that this issue takes precedence over internal disciplinary matters,
including that involving the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya,
Sarah Adwoa Safo.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, April 7, Mr. Kodua revealed that a
meeting originally scheduled for that day was postponed. He noted that the
seriousness of the drug-related allegations informed this decision, stressing
the importance of treating the matter with the urgency and seriousness it
demands.
According to him, the party had no immediate plans to deliberate on Adwoa
Safo’s case, contrary to public speculation. Instead, all efforts and
discussions were now centered around the need to ensure that the recent scandal
is handled transparently and with full government cooperation. He maintained
that this was not the time to divert party resources and attention to other
matters.
Mr. Kodua emphasized that the gravity of the alleged scandal had
implications for the nation’s international image and required a coordinated
and accountable response from all involved institutions. He insisted that the
people of Ghana deserve clear and factual information about the situation.
He acknowledged concerns from within the party about the government’s
handling of the issue. He said many party members had expressed disappointment
with how slow information had been, and how confusing the developments around
the scandal appeared. For the party’s leadership, these concerns reflect a
broader demand for greater transparency.
The General Secretary raised questions about why there has been limited
official communication from the country’s security agencies, considering the
seriousness of the matter and its potential to impact the country’s global
reputation. He called on relevant government departments to take proactive
steps in updating the public and ensuring confidence in the nation’s
institutions.
He further warned against attempts to downplay or ignore such serious
allegations, reiterating that the NPP was committed to accountability and
national interest first. He also insisted that until more information becomes
available and proper steps are taken to address the situation, the party will
remain fully focused on this unfolding issue.
The decision to postpone the internal disciplinary hearing involving Sarah
Adwoa Safo follows recent reports that she had gone to the NPP headquarters to
honor an invitation by the party's Disciplinary Committee. However, her
appearance was met with a ‘no-show’ from the committee. This led to
disappointment from the former MP and her supporters, who claimed they were not
formally informed of the change.
Though the party later explained that a letter had been sent to notify her
about the postponement, the incident has sparked conversations about
communication within the party and how such internal matters are managed.
Still, Mr. Kodua maintained that Adwoa Safo’s case would be revisited later,
once national issues have been fully addressed.
Meanwhile, the public continues to seek clarification on the nature and
extent of the alleged drug scandal. While official details remain limited, the
NPP is urging the government to respond decisively and maintain open communication
with the public to avoid unnecessary speculation.
Mr. Kodua's remarks appear to reflect a broader push within the NPP for
clarity and leadership during uncertain times. As Ghanaians await more
information from the appropriate authorities, the party is positioning itself
as a responsible stakeholder ready to collaborate in seeking truth and
protecting national integrity.
The NPP has, in recent years, stressed the importance of discipline and
transparency within its ranks. However, its current posture reflects an
understanding that national interest should always outweigh party politics. By
placing its focus on an issue that has caught the attention of both the public
and international observers, the party signals its readiness to prioritize
Ghana’s image and security.
As the days unfold, more updates are expected from the security agencies and
government spokespersons. The NPP leadership says it will continue to monitor
the situation closely and call for necessary steps to be taken in the best
interest of the nation.
