In a recent development, the Suame District Court has remanded seven military officers and one civilian into military custody in connection with the deaths of two young men in Kumasi. The suspects, including Lieutenant Selim Nikoi Neequaye, Lieutenant Emmanuel Abrokwa, and Lieutenant Daniel Osae, among others, are expected to reappear in court on April 22, 2025.
According to reports, the two victims, Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo, were arrested by military officers on March 28, 2025, on allegations of stealing an iPhone. The victims were taken to the 4BN barracks, where they were severely beaten before being dumped in a bush at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi. The bodies of the two men were later found unconscious and were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
A surviving victim, Christian Obiri Yeboah, also known as Kofi Yesu, told police that he and his deceased friends were arrested by the military officers, taken to the 4BN barracks, and severely beaten before being dumped in the Danyame bush. However, the suspects deny assaulting the victims, admitting only to detaining and later releasing them.
The court heard that a missing person's report filed by Michael Osei, a brother of one of the deceased, triggered police investigations. Osei reported receiving a distress call from his brother on the night of his arrest, claiming he and his friends had been detained by military officers.
The families of the deceased have identified the bodies at the KATH morgue and are demanding justice. The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation.
The Ghanaian military has cooperated with the police investigation, and the suspects are currently being held in military custody. The case is expected to continue on April 22, 2025, when the suspects will reappear in court.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of excessive force by military personnel and the need for greater accountability within the military. As the investigation continues, many are watching to see how the case will unfold and whether justice will be served for the families of the deceased ¹ ² ³.
