Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, has come
out in defense of the National Security's actions following recent raids at the
homes of former government officials. In a recent interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso
Nsem, Gbande clarified that the National Security operatives would never invade
an individual's home without proper justification. This statement followed a
raid at the residence of Supt. Yakubu Issahaku, Aide Du Camp to former Vice
President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which took place on Saturday at Sapeiman.
Issahaku reported being alerted by a friend via WhatsApp around 6:14 p.m.
that a group of around 30 armed military personnel, wearing masks, had entered
his home, proceeding to ransack the property. He claimed the security doors
were broken, CCTV systems disconnected, and internet routers, switches, and the
home’s hard disk were all removed. According to him, the incident caused
significant damage and raised serious concerns among the affected individuals.
Gbande explained that while he might not have all the specific details
regarding the raid, he assured the public that National Security always follows
the law and only acts on solid intelligence. "I may not have all the
details because of job description and capacity, but I do know that National
Security will not invade anybody’s premises without a cause," Gbande
stated, highlighting that he was speaking on behalf of the current crop of
operatives. He also added that raids such as these are often based on credible
intelligence or tips that may indicate the presence of stolen goods or
individuals wanted by authorities.
The Deputy Director emphasized that if there is intelligence suggesting that
a property is being used to harbor illicit items, a search is necessary to
confirm or deny the claims. This defense aims to assure the public that the
operations are carried out in line with National Security’s mandate, which is
to safeguard the nation’s peace and security.
In response to concerns about the raids, Gbande reassured that further
arrests and operations are likely to follow. The National Security is committed
to ensuring that individuals involved in illegal activities are brought to
justice. Gbande's comments reflect the agency's ongoing efforts to maintain
security and uphold the law, even when it involves uncomfortable or contentious
actions.
While there may be questions about the nature of some operations, Gbande
stressed that National Security’s approach is always in line with their
responsibility to protect citizens and maintain the integrity of the country’s
security framework. The recent raid has sparked debates over the balance
between security and personal privacy, with many people voicing concerns about
the scope of National Security's operations and the potential for abuse of
power.
However, for now, National Security has assured that every action is taken
with proper legal justification, and the agency continues to work with the
relevant authorities to ensure that Ghana’s safety and security are maintained.
The debate over these operations is expected to continue as more information
becomes available and as more raids and arrests are made in the coming days.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether public opinion will
shift or whether National Security's actions will gain more widespread support.
The government has reiterated that the country’s peace and security must always
be prioritized, even if it means taking actions that may raise concerns among
some citizens. The National Security continues to emphasize that every
operation is conducted with the ultimate goal of safeguarding the nation.
