Two Killed, One Injured in Kumasi School Bus Accident
Tragedy struck the Patasi area of Kumasi on Monday, April 8, 2025, when a school bus reportedly lost control and crashed into pedestrians, resulting in two fatalities and one person critically injured. The unfortunate incident occurred in front of a storey building, where the victims were said to be conversing when the accident took place.
The deceased have been identified as Maame Serwaa, a 74-year-old woman, and a man known only as Alfred, believed to be in his late 40s. A third person, who sustained serious injuries, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Suntreso Government Hospital.
Eyewitnesses at the scene narrated that the victims were standing and engaged in a conversation near the house when the school bus, which had veered off the road, struck them unexpectedly. The impact of the crash was severe, and parts of the nearby property were also destroyed. The bus came to a stop after colliding with the building, trapping the victims underneath.
Emergency services, including the police and the fire department, responded promptly to the scene. Officers worked to free the victims who were pinned under the vehicle. While two of the victims were pronounced dead, the injured individual was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to initial statements from the bus driver, the accident was caused by brake failure. The driver alleged that he lost control of the vehicle after the brakes failed to respond, leading to the fatal collision. The police have since taken the driver into custody, and he is currently assisting with investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have launched a formal inquiry into the cause of the crash, with particular attention to the mechanical condition of the school bus. There is growing concern among residents about the maintenance of school transport vehicles and road safety measures in residential neighborhoods.
