The Office of the Presidency has
offered reassurance to the public regarding the health condition of Vice
President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, following growing speculation
over her recent absence from official duties. The update, delivered by the
Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu,
affirmed that the Vice President is in good health and currently resting in the
United Kingdom under medical supervision.
In an interview with Onua TV on
April 8, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu explained that the Vice President’s temporary
absence is due to a three-week medical leave granted on the advice of her
doctors. He confirmed that she is undergoing a period of rest and is expected
to return to her official duties very soon.
According to Mr. Ofosu, the Vice
President is responding well to treatment and is under no immediate health
threat. He noted that while her health condition required her to take a short
break, she remains stable and in excellent spirits. The communication was aimed
at addressing public curiosity and concern, particularly on social media
platforms where unverified claims had begun to circulate.
Per reports from citinewsroom.com,
sources at the Jubilee House confirmed that Prof Opoku-Agyemang began her
medical leave on April 7, 2025. Prior to traveling abroad, she received initial
medical care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra. The decision
to continue her treatment overseas was based on professional advice from her
medical team to ensure optimal recovery.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that
the Vice President’s well-being remains a top priority for the government and
reassured the public that she is receiving the best possible care. He described
the leave as a necessary period of rest and recuperation, not an emergency,
stressing that the Vice President remains committed to her responsibilities and
will return soon.
Adding his voice to the reassurance,
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, while speaking
during a community engagement event in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 6, 2025,
expressed gratitude for the support shown by Ghanaians and the international
community. He credited the Vice President’s steady recovery to the goodwill,
prayers, and emotional support received from both home and abroad.
Mr. Ablakwa dismissed what he termed
misleading narratives circulating about the Vice President’s health status. He
strongly condemned the spread of false information and described it as
unhelpful and inconsistent with the values of solidarity that define Ghanaian
society. He called on the public to stay focused on positive developments and
to support public figures with kindness and encouragement.
The Foreign Affairs Minister went on
to highlight the Vice President’s journey as a trailblazer in Ghanaian
politics. He praised her role as a symbol of hope and strength for women and
girls across the country. Her rise to the position of Vice President, he noted,
marked a significant milestone for gender inclusion and equity in national
leadership. According to him, her resilience and dedication to service continue
to inspire a generation of young people, especially girls, who see in her a
role model worth emulating.
Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, an
accomplished academic and former Minister for Education, has long been
recognized for her calm leadership style and steadfast dedication to social
development. Her current role as Vice President represents a historic moment in
Ghana's democratic journey, and her contributions to national governance have
earned her widespread respect.
As she continues her medical rest
abroad, government officials have reiterated their confidence in her full
recovery and return to office. Meanwhile, preparations are reportedly underway
to ensure a smooth transition back to her regular schedule upon her return.
Officials close to the presidency
continue to urge the public to respect the Vice President’s privacy during this
period, while maintaining optimism about her return. The presidency has
promised to keep citizens informed of any relevant updates regarding her
health, reinforcing the government's commitment to transparency and public
trust.
