ICRC: Killing of Palestinian medics must mark a turning point

GAZA, (PIC)

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross’s sub-delegation in Gaza said the organization is “pained and angered” by the recent killing of Palestinian medics in Gaza.

“Their killing is a stark reminder of how dangerous Gaza is for civilians, and for humanitarian workers who risk everything to save lives,” Adrian Zimmermann said in a statement shared on social media.

“Every medic killed in Gaza is a lifeline lost for civilians who cannot afford to lose more. We continue to be pained and angered by the killing of medics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society, many of whom we worked with at the Red Cross Field Hospital and other hospitals in Gaza, along with other first responders from the Civil Defense.”

“Every day brings a new reminder of their killing. We are deeply troubled by the horrific scenes depicting the circumstances of their deaths.”

This incident must mark a turning point, he concluded.

Last month, Israeli forces killed 15 medical and humanitarian aid workers in Rafah as they were traveling in a convoy of ambulances to assist people wounded in an earlier attack.

The Israeli army prevented search teams from accessing the area for several days. The bodies of 14 of the workers were later discovered in a mass grave, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said.

The Hamas Movement stated on Wednesday evening that the Israeli military operation in the Balata refugee camp in Nablus represents a new escalation in the ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people.

The Movement said it is a continuation of the genocide that has been ongoing in the Gaza Strip for over a year and a half, as well as part of a systematic campaign of forced displacement targeting Jenin and Tulkarem in recent months.

In a statement, Hamas stressed that the Palestinian people, who have confronted the occupation with steadfastness and sacrifice, will once again thwart all attempts by the enemy to undermine the popular support for the resistance in the West Bank — particularly in its steadfast refugee camps.

These crimes, Hamas affirmed, will not break the will of the Palestinian people or deter them from defending their land, holy sites, and legitimate rights.

The Movement also paid tribute to the youth of Balata camp, describing them as heroes who bravely confronted the occupation forces and defended their camp.

“We heard their chants for the resistance and its martyred leaders,” the statement said, calling it a sign of loyalty that proves the people will not stray from the path of their free leaders.

Hamas called on the masses in the West Bank to “launch a widespread popular uprising, to stand united in the face of the occupation, and to strengthen solidarity and support for the areas under Zionist attack”.
