Haruna Mohammed Reaffirms NPP’s
Stand Against Drug Trafficking in Ghana
The Deputy General Secretary of the
New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has reaffirmed the party’s unwavering
commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and abuse in Ghana, highlighting the
urgent need to protect the country’s image on the international stage. His
remarks were made following recent tensions surrounding a failed attempt by the
National Investigative Bureau (NIB) to arrest the Member of Parliament for
Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, on April 9.
This attempted arrest, which
occurred shortly after Rev. Fordjour made allegations of narcotics trafficking
against the government, triggered a swift response from key members of the NPP
and the Minority in Parliament, who collectively stepped in to prevent the
arrest. The incident has since ignited national discourse about the role of
political actors in combating drug-related activities and the importance of
transparency in addressing such sensitive issues.
In an exclusive interview with
Channel One Newsroom, Haruna Mohammed did not hold back in expressing the
party’s dedication to fighting narcotics-related challenges in Ghana. According
to him, the NPP sees the ongoing issue not only as a legal matter but also as
one that affects Ghana’s reputation globally. He cited historical drug-related
incidents that have cast a shadow over the nation and emphasized the party's
desire to distance the country from such negative associations.
Referencing events from the past,
Haruna noted that the most significant drug-related scandal in the country’s
history occurred in 2014, during a period when the same president who currently
holds office was in power. He stressed that the focus should now be on ensuring
that Ghana never relives such moments. He added that it was under the
leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2021 that Ghana was
removed from the drug trafficking blacklist—a major milestone that the party is
determined to protect.
The NPP’s leadership believes that
sustaining Ghana’s international credibility requires a strong stance against
any form of drug trafficking, regardless of political affiliations. Haruna
Mohammed urged all stakeholders to approach the current situation with
sincerity and a commitment to justice. He cautioned against actions that could
compromise the country’s progress in the fight against drugs or trigger a
return to the blacklist.
Commenting further on the recent
developments involving Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Haruna acknowledged that such
sensitive matters must be handled with care, ensuring that due process is
followed at every stage. He underscored the need for collaborative efforts
between political actors, investigative bodies, and international partners in
addressing drug-related concerns. According to him, maintaining national
integrity should be the guiding principle in responding to such incidents.
He also welcomed the involvement of
global institutions like the United Nations, which has called on the government
to support credible investigations into narcotics allegations. Haruna noted
that the international community is watching, and Ghana must demonstrate a
clear commitment to truth and accountability. He emphasized that the NPP will
continue to support all efforts aimed at uncovering the truth while ensuring
that no one is unjustly targeted for political reasons.
The ongoing dialogue around drug
trafficking in Ghana has once again brought to the forefront the importance of
strong institutions, transparent governance, and responsible leadership. As
political tensions rise, the NPP’s firm position on rooting out drug
trafficking stands as a call to action for all public servants and citizens
alike to protect the nation’s image and uphold its laws. Haruna Mohammed made
it clear that the party is focused on fostering a future where drug-related
activities have no place in the country's political or social systems.
The developments around this case
are being followed closely by citizens and international observers, as the
nation continues to navigate the complexities of law enforcement, political
responsibility, and public trust. Haruna's strong remarks reflect the NPP's
determination to uphold national values while addressing one of the most
critical issues facing the country today.
