Urgent Call to Action: Addressing the Rising Accidents on Accra-Kumasi Highway
The Accra-Kumasi highway, a critical artery connecting Ghana's capital to its second-largest city, has become increasingly hazardous due to a surge in vehicular accidents. This alarming trend has prompted the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu East, Yaw Owusu Addo, to advocate for immediate interventions to enhance road safety.
Recent incidents underscore the gravity of the situation. On February 15, 2024, a tragic accident near Nkawkaw resulted in the deaths of three male pupils and a female teacher from the Ampeah Memorial School. The crash involved a Nissan Patrol vehicle and a Hyundai mini-bus, with preliminary reports indicating that unauthorized U-turns and unapproved access points contributed to the collision.
Similarly, on March 25, 2023, a head-on collision between two Toyota Hiace buses at Birimso led to nine fatalities and 19 injuries. Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to excessive speeding and reckless overtaking maneuvers.
Several factors have been identified as primary contributors to the escalating accidents on the Accra-Kumasi highway:
Reckless Driving: Many drivers engage in dangerous behaviors such as speeding, improper overtaking, and ignoring traffic regulations, significantly increasing the risk of collisions.
Poor Road Conditions: The presence of potholes, uneven surfaces, and inadequate lighting hampers safe navigation, making the highway more prone to accidents.
Unauthorized Access Points: Unapproved U-turns and illegal access routes disrupt traffic flow and create unexpected hazards for motorists.
Lax Enforcement of Traffic Laws: Inconsistent enforcement leads to a culture of impunity among drivers, further exacerbating reckless driving behaviors. MCE's Call for Immediate Action
In light of these challenges, MCE Yaw Owusu Addo has emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive measures to mitigate accidents on the highway. He advocates for the closure of unauthorized access points and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to deter reckless driving. Addo warns that without prompt action, the region faces the prospect of more devastating accidents.
To address the pressing issue of road safety on the Accra-Kumasi highway, the following measures are recommended:
Enhanced Law Enforcement: Increase patrols and deploy speed cameras to monitor and deter reckless driving behaviors.
Infrastructure Improvements: Conduct regular maintenance to repair potholes, improve road surfaces, and install adequate lighting to enhance visibility.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate drivers and the general public on the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic laws through media channels and community programs.
Regulation of Access Points: Identify and close unauthorized U-turns and access routes to streamline traffic flow and reduce unexpected hazards.
The rising incidence of accidents on the Accra-Kumasi highway poses a significant threat to public safety and underscores the need for immediate, coordinated action. By implementing stricter law enforcement, improving infrastructure, and raising public awareness, stakeholders can work together to create a safer travel environment for all road users.
