The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has announced the government’s commitment to reinstate public sector workers who were wrongfully dismissed during the transitional period following the change in administration. Speaking during an interview on Joy FM on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Minister revealed that a special investigative committee has been formed to address the matter urgently.
The committee, co-chaired by the
Minister and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Nana Oye Bampoe, is currently reviewing
the circumstances under which about 12,000 public sector workers lost their jobs.
Most of these workers were employed shortly before the political transition,
raising questions about the legitimacy of their appointments.
Dr. Pelpuo clarified that the aim of
the investigation is to verify the authenticity of the employment procedures
used and to ensure that individuals who followed the correct processes are
reinstated without any further delays. He emphasized that the process is not
intended to penalize anyone unfairly but to bring clarity and justice to the
affected personnel.
He noted that while many of the
dismissals may have stemmed from administrative oversights, others involved
issues such as the use of inaccurate documentation and irregular recruitment
practices. As such, the committee’s work will also help identify those whose
appointments did not follow the proper protocols.
According to Dr. Pelpuo, the
committee is working under clear directives from the President, who has
expressed concern about the situation and the impact it may have on workers and
their families. The Minister said the review process is expected to be
completed within a week and is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and
the protection of public service standards.
The government has reiterated its
commitment to promoting lawful and ethical employment practices across the
public sector. Dr. Pelpuo assured Ghanaians that no legitimately employed
worker would be left out of the reinstatement process, adding that the welfare
and rights of workers remain a top priority for the administration.
The move has been welcomed by many
as a step toward strengthening confidence in the public sector employment
system and ensuring accountability in governance.
