Paul Scholes believes Ruben Amorim 'does not like his team' - 'Nowhere near the standard'When asked about Manchester United's struggles under Ruben Amorim, Paul Scholes didn't back down. Andre Onana's two goalkeeping blunders ensured The Red Devils were denied a first-leg victory at the Groupama Stadium against Lyon. However, the focus of Scholes' criticism was on the attacking areas of the pitch, and he explained that Amorim does not have enough quality.
I don't think he believes that," Scholes told TNT Sports.
"I don't think he likes his team, to be honest. I think he is aware that he does not have a great team and that he desires better. "I think you can see that he needs better from the way he is on the touchline. He always looks disappointed and the way he's speaking there, tells me he's disappointed with what he's got and he needs better.
"Everyone knows he needs better if he's going to make Manchester United challenge where they want to be. It's everywhere on the field." One player who has seemingly been a shining light in an otherwise dismal season for United has been Bruno Fernandes.
I think he can be quite pleased defensively; they looked quite tight, quite solid recently, but that's taking away that goal threat they should have, and that quality around the pitch isn't quite there.
"I don't think they have control in the middle of the pitch, I don't think the forwards' quality is quite there. Look, he realizes that he is not stupid. He's never going to say it, but he doesn't like this football team and that's something I take away from that.
"I get the impression that this team is not even close to the standard that he wants and expects. Over the next two or three years, he'll be looking for something better, more entertaining to watch, and of much higher quality in every area of the football field. That's what he'll strive for.
Scholes' fellow TNT pundit Karen Carney berated Onana for his two errors, especially after he got into a verbal dispute with Nemanja Matic this week.
She said: "When you do a lot of talking you have to be clean in your performance and he wasn't tonight." "He needs to be better," Scholes said in reference to the goalkeeper. He's had a really poor year and talking about other teams is probably not a wise thing to do."
