The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially launched the ECOWAS Media Excellence Award, an initiative aimed at recognising journalists and storytellers who have contributed significantly to promoting peace, development, and democracy across the region. The award seeks to honour impactful voices whose work reflects the experiences and aspirations of the people of West Africa.

The jury responsible for evaluating entries has convened in Abuja, Nigeria, where deliberations began on April 9 and are expected to conclude by April 12, 2025. The selection panel comprises seven prominent experts representing the three official languages of ECOWAS—English, French, and Portuguese. These jurors bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the selection process, ensuring that only the most outstanding works receive recognition.

The panel includes notable figures such as Mr. Mambureh Njie, Special Advisor on Economic Affairs to the ECOWAS President; Mr. Joel Ahofodji, Head of Communication at the ECOWAS Commission; and Professor Abdoulie Gassama, who serves as the President of the Jury. Their combined expertise covers a broad spectrum of communication and development fields, further reinforcing the credibility and depth of the awards process.

The assessment criteria include originality, ethical standards, societal impact, and technical quality. These standards are carefully applied as the jury reviews submissions across multiple categories, beginning with television productions. Through this initiative, ECOWAS underscores its dedication to supporting free media, regional cooperation, and stories that accurately represent the realities within its member states.

During the event, several speakers took the opportunity to highlight the transformative power of journalism in shaping public discourse and influencing positive change. They emphasized that the role of the media is critical in nurturing democratic institutions and promoting social progress in West Africa.

The ECOWAS Media Excellence Award represents more than just recognition; it serves as a platform to encourage journalists to continue producing meaningful content that reflects the diverse cultural, political, and economic narratives of the region. It also seeks to strengthen the role of the media in promoting transparency, good governance, and a unified regional identity.

As the jury’s work progresses in Abuja, expectations remain high for the announcement of winners who will emerge as the most influential media voices shaping the future of the West African sub-region.
