A tragic helicopter crash in New York’s Hudson River has claimed the lives of a prominent Spanish family and their pilot, sending waves of grief across both the corporate world and the football community in Europe.
The victims included Agustín Escobar and Mercè Camprubí Montal, along with their three young children, aged four, five, and eleven. The family, who had been living in Barcelona, were on a sightseeing tour when the helicopter went down near Manhattan. Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.
Both parents held executive roles at Siemens, one of the world’s leading technology and infrastructure firms. Mr. Escobar had recently been appointed CEO of rail infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, a role that followed his leadership as president and CEO of Siemens Spain. His career with the company spanned nearly three decades, during which he held leadership roles across Latin America, the United States, and Europe. Known for his global outlook and passion for building high-performing teams, he was respected by peers as both a strong professional and a devoted family man.
Mrs. Camprubí Montal also built a distinguished career at Siemens. Originally from Barcelona, she worked most recently as a global commercialisation manager and had been with the company for over 16 years. Her experience also included international postings, particularly in the energy sector, where she thrived in roles that demanded both strategic thinking and cross-cultural collaboration.
Beyond their corporate success, the family had deep-rooted ties to Catalan heritage and one of Europe’s most storied football clubs. Mrs. Camprubí Montal’s family had long been associated with FC Barcelona. Her grandfather, Agustí Montal Costa, served as club president during a defining era that saw the arrival of football legend Johan Cruyff. Her great-grandfather also held the same position in the mid-20th century. Her brother had recently been considered as a candidate in the club’s presidential race, a sign of the family’s ongoing influence in the sporting world.
Tributes have poured in from former colleagues, local leaders, and business executives across the globe. Many described the couple as warm, down-to-earth, and deeply committed to their family. Their deaths are not only a heartbreaking loss for their loved ones, but also for the communities and industries they helped shape with their leadership, vision, and integrity.
In this moment of collective sorrow, they are remembered not only for their achievements but for the values they carried—with humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to people.
