Italian Ambassador Strengthens Security Ties with Ghana Police
The Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs. Laura Ranalli, has paid a courtesy
visit to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu, at the
Police Headquarters in Accra. The visit marked a step toward reinforcing
collaboration between Ghana and Italy, particularly in the areas of security
and capacity building.
Mrs. Ranalli was accompanied by Mr. Gabriele Ubaldo Palermo, Deputy Head of
Mission, and Brigadier General Andrea Paris, a Security and Capacity Building
Expert with the Italian Delegation to the African Union and UNECA in Addis
Ababa. Discussions during the visit focused on deepening bilateral ties and
exploring opportunities for the two countries to collaborate on modern security
strategies and technical training for police personnel.
The meeting reflects the growing international support for Ghana’s security
reforms and highlights the value of diplomatic relations in addressing
cross-border threats and building stronger institutions. Both parties
emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and mutual cooperation in
sustaining peace and improving the efficiency of law enforcement efforts.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Yohonu, is leading a
high-level team comprising operational, investigative, and intelligence
officers to Bawku in the Upper East Region. The visit aims to gain firsthand
insight into the recent unrest and assess the situation to implement
appropriate responses.
The recent disturbances in Bawku resulted in the unfortunate loss of a
civilian, Fuseini Iddrisu, and left five others, including a police officer and
an immigration officer, with gunshot wounds. The affected individuals are
currently receiving medical attention. The incident also led to the destruction
of police property, including two vehicles and rented police accommodation at
Binduri, as well as damage to homes of some officers.
In response, security presence has been heightened in Bawku and neighboring
communities with joint police and military patrols. The IGP and his team are
expected to meet with the bereaved family, visit the injured, and engage with
officers whose properties were affected by the incident.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its unwavering commitment
to restoring calm in Bawku. The Service is actively engaging with the Ghana
Armed Forces, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders
to foster peace, stability, and respect for the rule of law in the area.
