UN Reports 36 Israeli Attacks Killing Only Palestinian Women And Children In Gaza
The United Nations has confirmed that 36 Israeli air strikes on Gaza since mid-March resulted in the deaths of only Palestinian women and children. Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed concern over the cumulative impact of Israel's actions in Gaza, warning that Palestinians' "continued existence as a group" is threatened.
The findings come amid escalating violence in Gaza, with over 1,500 Palestinians killed since the Israeli military broke a ceasefire in March. Israel has imposed a total blockade on the coastal Palestinian enclave, leading to warnings that food, water, medicine, and critical supplies are quickly running out.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the dire situation, stating, "More than an entire month has passed without a drop of aid into Gaza. No food. No fuel. No medicine. No commercial supplies." The situation has led to a humanitarian crisis, with many trapped under rubble and unable to access basic necessities.
At least 15 Palestinians were killed in Gaza since dawn on Friday, including 10 members of a single family, with seven children, who died in the bombing of a home in Khan Younis. Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum reported from central Gaza's Deir el-Balah, sharing horrific testimonies from civil defense crews rescuing Palestinians trapped under destroyed homes, hearing cries for help from babies and children.
The situation in Gaza is "worse than it has ever been before," according to Shamdasani. Palestinians are being forcibly transferred into increasingly small areas, while Israeli military attacks continue, humanitarian aid is blocked, and Israeli officials condition assistance on the release of captives held in the enclave.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported that approximately 400,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced across Gaza since the ceasefire ended on March 18. They are now enduring the longest blockage of aid and commercial supplies since the start of the war.
Israel has vowed to press on with its military offensive, outlining plans to seize new territory in southern Gaza and issuing evacuation orders. The international community is growing increasingly concerned about the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France could recognize the Palestinian state in the coming months, amid the ongoing conflict. The UN and rights groups are warning of a catastrophic humanitarian situation due to the blockage of aid and essential supplies.
The situation in Gaza is dire, with the UN warning of a potential threat to Palestinians' continued existence as a group. The international community must take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
