The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has publicly denounced efforts to ignite tribal tensions surrounding the appointment of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), particularly within the Mampong Constituency. This strong stance was conveyed in a statement issued on Thursday, on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, by his communication aide, Hussein Ibrahim. The statement addressed what was described as a "deliberate attempt" by certain individuals to fuel tribal sentiments and disseminate misinformation, with the aim of tarnishing the reputations of both the Regional Minister and President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the statement, "Some aggrieved aspirants are peddling falsehoods, claiming that the regional leadership manipulated the vetting process to favour particular individuals." The communication aide firmly refuted these allegations, asserting that "These accusations are not only false but are rooted in hatred and prejudice." He clarified that following the regional vetting process, only three names were forwarded to the NDC National Secretariat for further consideration.

While acknowledging that some aspirants had filed appeals, the aide emphasized that the ultimate decision to accept or modify these submissions rests solely with the national leadership of the party. He also dismissed claims that additional names were "smuggled" into the list, affirming that the regional process was conducted with utmost transparency, equity, and fairness.

Mr. Ibrahim stressed that, "The President has not made any MDCE appointments in the Ashanti Region as of now," with the exception of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). He urged party members to disregard any circulating rumors and to await official announcements from the appropriate authorities.

The statement also drew attention to a "worrying trend" of tribal agitation and misinformation emerging from various constituencies within the Ashanti Region, including Kumawu, Kwadaso, Atwima Nwabiagya South, and Mampong. The communication aide cautioned that such divisive actions could potentially jeopardize the confirmation process of the yet-to-be-appointed MMDCEs.

In a call for unity and calm, the NDC Ashanti Regional leadership encouraged party members to place their trust in the leadership of the President and to support decisions that serve the broader interests of the NDC and the people of the region. "Let us not allow parochial interests and divisive rhetoric to derail the gains we are collectively making," the statement concluded.

This statement comes at a time of heightened political tension as the party prepares to announce new local government appointments across the Ashanti Region. The regional leadership is clearly attempting to preempt any potential disruptions or internal conflicts that could arise from the appointment process by addressing the issue of tribal incitement and misinformation head-on. By calling for calm and unity, the NDC is signaling its commitment to maintaining cohesion within its ranks and ensuring a smooth transition in local government leadership.
