President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong optimism that the peace
initiative led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will yield lasting stability
in Bawku following renewed violence in the area. Speaking at the Ghana Military
Academy’s Graduation Parade on Friday, April 11, 2025, the President condemned
the recent confrontations between security personnel and the youth of Bawku,
which allegedly led to casualties and destruction of property, including an
attack on the private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga.
President Mahama highlighted the government’s resolve to address the
insecurity in Bawku, which has remained a national concern for years. He
pointed to a violent incident that occurred just two days prior at a local
market, resulting in tragic loss of life and the vandalism of private property.
He emphasized that such unrest brings no benefits to anyone and urged all
parties to embrace the peace process.
He assured the public that the mediation process spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei
Tutu II remains the most credible path to lasting peace. According to the
President, the initiative has brought all key stakeholders to the negotiation
table, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive roadmap to end the conflict.
He disclosed that Otumfuo, who is currently out of the country, is expected to
resume the mediation talks upon his return next week.
In addition to supporting peace efforts, President Mahama affirmed his
administration’s commitment to justice, assuring that every act of criminality
connected to the recent unrest will be thoroughly investigated. He directed the
security services to act swiftly and impartially, regardless of the individuals
involved, as part of efforts to strengthen public confidence in law enforcement
institutions.
President Mahama reiterated the importance of channeling national resources
and attention toward sustainable development rather than conflict. He
acknowledged the challenges faced by security agencies and encouraged continued
efforts to maintain peace in all regions across Ghana, particularly in hotspots
like Bawku where tensions have escalated.
The ongoing mediation process has been welcomed by many observers who see it
as a critical step toward healing and reconciliation. As tensions ease and
dialogue resumes, hopes remain high that a permanent solution to the Bawku
conflict is within reach.
